How do I turn off the speech recognition tool in Leopard?

Ever since installing the Leopard update 10.5.2, the speech recognition has been on, reading aloud every title bar when opening a web page, the title of documents, etc. It is getting extremely annoying but even though it shows in the Speech window (under System Preferences) that it is turned off, it is obviously not. Any ideas? Thanks.

  1. speech recognition

Speech recognition is when the Mac understands what you’re saying to it, not when it’s talking to you. You need to go into the Speech preferences, but this time, click on the “Text to Speech” panel. Make sure everything there is turned off, and you should get what you want.

If you’re still getting speech after that, go into the Universal Access preferences and make sure that VoiceOver is also turned off.
